A Love Like Lightning

"Love is like lightning, it can strike at any time”.  My Uncle Marvin used to tell me that at the rise of every new love interest I had as an adolescent.  I would laugh and brush it off and go about my way.

Today, my 6 year old son has a little girl in his class who loves and wants to marry him.  My 5 year old daughter speaks frequently about a little boy in her class. Initially I was a little concerned, I brushed it off and tried to change the subject, until I got to thinking.  What’s so wrong with that? What if love, really does strike like lightning? We’ve all had that little flutter of our heart strings at some point in our life right?

Josh and Hannah’s love hit like lightning so to speak.  Josh grew up in Blairsville, Hannah in Thailand (missionary kid), and met at the campus library where Hannah was studying music therapy and Josh was in med school at William Carey University.  While Hannah was working the late shift in the library one evening, Josh took notice and offered to buy her coffee. From that day forward Josh started bringing Hannah a coffee on the days she worked, paying special attention to get her cream and sugar just right (good man)!  By their first date on Valentine's six years ago, according to Hannah, they both were quite certain they were made for each other. Today they are the proud mom and dad of their Boston Terriers, Bailey and Finn.

So let’s fast forward to the here and now. Take a look at Josh and Hannah.  Sure, it was a styled session. They weren’t actually getting married (again).  The dress was borrowed and the hair/makeup/ and flowers were graciously done at no charge to us.  But can you see the love? Does it not show in the laughs, the gazes, the holds? There virtually was no direction from myself and Kara.  They were just themselves. Themselves, in love.

People, always have love for your fellow man.  I don’t mean the gushy love. No, I mean the kind, empathetic, patient kind of love.  Love with a Jesus kind of love. Love even at their very worst, at their very lowest, ugliest of selves.  Love when it’s good and love when it’s bad. Love when you don’t think you have any love to give. Just love.  It’s easier than the alternative, and it’s a sure passage to freedom. And if you’ve not experienced love, remember what Uncle Marvin used to say:  “it’s just like lightning, and it can strike at anytime.”
